Dog Flu Symptoms Similar To Kennel Cough

If the avian flu virus is in your area (though still not been found in North America), it might be a good idea to keep your dog indoors to prevent contact with infected birds. If you have a hunting dog, it should reconsider its use to grab dead birds. Report to the local veterinary authority of any evidence of high mortality of birds, whether domestic or wild. If your dog shows breathing problems or nasal discharge, consult a veterinarian. Wash sheets of animals with soap or any detergent commercial.

An equine virus has recently been shown in dogs in the United States. It is believed that the horse viruses have mutated to produce a variant of the dogs. This could represent a slightly higher risk for dogs that avian influenza. This type of exchange between species is very common for virus type A. It is unclear when this type of transition occurred.

The symptoms of Dog Flu can be similar to kennel cough and include: a persistent cough, mild and wet, and heavy nasal discharge. More severe cases may include high fever, pneumonia and difficulty when breathing, which can also be caused by secondary bacterial infection.

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian. So far, there has been little indication of transmission from dogs to humans. There is no vaccine available at this time. Treatment is usually limited to intravenous fluids to help your dog stay hydrated along with the use of antibiotics to control infection.
