There is much information about influenza virus A subtype H1N1 (originally known as swine flu) and how to protect yourself and your family

But what about our dogs? Can contracting or spreading the H1N1 virus among themselves or with members of the human family? Most likely the answer is no. This is not an absolute answer, because the viruses have the ability to mutate, but not historically been known of the dog flu transmission to humans (or vice versa).

The AVMA says that to date there is no evidence that domestic animals are susceptible to this new strain of influenza, as it was only transmitted from person to person or from human to pig. There is not yet enough information so that we know for sure if the virus can spread to other animals.

The best advice is to always follow the guidelines of common sense when dealing with animals (eg, hand washing). Furthermore, it is more important than ever that landlords watch the health of their dogs and consult the veterinarian if your dog shows any sign of illness. Keeping your pets healthy reduces the risk of disease.

A little more information ...

There are two types of viruses that cause influenza: type A and type B.

Type B viruses circulate widely among humans.

Type A viruses are found in humans and many animals, usually strains are species specific. The dogs have their own version of the influenza virus.

Influenza virus canine is the type A subtype H3N8. While dogs can be infected and sick with this strain of the virus, humans are not so similar to this species and to share this virus in its present form. and still have not been informed yet of any event that has spread to humans.

"There is currently no data to show no risk that dogs and cats from getting this virus strain," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine Bergh Memorial Hospital of the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in New York City.

Interestingly, the birds play an important role in the spread of all kinds influenza virus A.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) informed us that: "Wild birds are the main natural reservoir of all subtypes of type A influenza virus and are believed to be the source of influenza virus type A in all other animals .
